Spiritual enlightenment or SPAM?
This morning, following a hearty Easter breakfast of matzoh and traif-free chicken sausages, I set out on my Sunday morning power-walk in the 'hood. (Can a suburban enclave of colonials be considered a 'hood? I'm still not certain.)
In any event, a car drove up slowly next to me as I walked. The driver might have had the look of a serial killer (small, wire-framed glasses, unmemorable vehicle), but I slowed down regardless. He pressed a small four-color pamphlet into my hand. The headline read, "Love: Looking for the Real Thing?" Hmmmm...
He drove off.
The mini-brochure was a marketing piece for the Harvest Time Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. (They actually have a decent website...I checked it out.) Although I have my own personal belief system and am not currently in the market for a spirituality tune-up, I could not help but respect the great guerilla marketing tactic. No door-knocking on Easter Sunday...no intrusive in-your-face infomercials...no assaultive street corner tactics. Just a simple drive-by on a peaceful Sunday. (The aforementioned "love" the brochure referred to was a love of G-d. The copy was simple and compelling. The graphic design was not NY agency slick, but it worked for the purpose. The brochure even contained a bar code...perhaps they scan it when someone brings it into the church and you win a prize of some sort -- a quality place in heaven, perhaps.)
So, whether the product is snugglies, shoes, or spirituality, marketing has clearly become a part of our daily lives, even on religious holidays. This campaign was actually quite effective and, as a result, I ended up "spreading their word" via my blog. (Now if they had only asked me to friend them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, or check-in on Four Square, they REALLY would have had a blessed campaign!)
Amen sister. So much of marketing is simply getting your message in front of people and letting them decide...God does work in mysterious ways, be it a burning bush, an itinerant preacher, a guy in a car cruising for converts...or getting someone to mention a church in her blog...
